Something beautiful
is coming here soon
Sunflower Meadow
For anyone who has spent time with us at Grow Forrest Hill, you will know we are soil mad. Good soil = Good plants = Good people. So alongside our compost bins, it was only natural to share the joy with our neighbours and start a kitchen scrap collection point.
The history of the collection point.
Who would have thought, 2 months after we started our community collection point, Auckland Council would announce that it was rolling out curb-side food scrap bins across Auckland, including little old Forrest Hill. Despite this, a faithful few kept adding to our collection point, which went straight into our bins.
So why is your collection point ending?
There is a bit of an art to composting, with a few ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’. Meat scraps, shellfish shells, and other stinky goodies take a long time to break down, and provide quite a smell. Despite many attempts to keep these ingredients out of our bins, we were unsuccessful. There are many great parts of running a community garden, but this was not one of them, so we decided to call it a day and focus on other ways to gather green waste for our compost.
Thanks
Thanks to everyone who made the effort to wander over to our bins and add to our community composting. If you have kitchen waste, please use your council-provided bins from now on. And we would love to see you in a Sunday to help us continue the miraculous cycle of decomposition to yummy plants.
